The School of Education is pleased to support applications for post-graduate scholarships towards PhD study.
The School of Education is pleased to announce that applications for post-graduate scholarships are now invited.
We will be supporting applications for two scholarship competitions for suitable students who wish to pursue doctoral study. These are the following:
a) The University of Sheffield PhD scholarship competition
b) Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) scholarship competition through the White Rose Doctoral Training Centre (WR - DTC), a major new collaboration between the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield and York.
The University of Sheffield PhD scholarship competition (Faculty Scholarships)
Award details
The Faculty of Social Sciences can offer a range of awards which may include:
- Fees (UK/EU or Overseas) and a full stipend at the RCUK rate (£13,590 in 2011-12)
- Fees (UK/EU or Overseas) and a half stipend (£6,795 in 2011-12)
- Fees only (UK/EU or Overseas)
- A contribution towards fees or living expenses
These scholarships fund up to three years full-time (or six years part-time) Doctoral study, subject to satisfactory progress.
Who can apply
- Awards are open to UK, EU and International applicants. International applicants who may receive UK level fees will need to fund the remainder. They will also need to satisfy the School’s English language requirements for postgraduate study.
- You should have, or expect to achieve, a first or upper second class UK honours degree or equivalent, and/or a Distinction in a related Master’s degree.
- You should be applying to start your first year of study on a full-time or part-time PhD with the University in the 2013-14 academic year (i.e. after 1st August 2013, exact start date to be agreed with your supervisor).
Applications
We would welcome and be happy to support any topic related to Education provided that there is a good match with supervisory expertise, and more generally with the School’s research portfolio. We strongly recommend that prospective applicants familiarize themselves with academic staff profiles in order to identify a suitable potential supervisor. We can help in the preparation of your research proposal and seeking support from the School is encouraged. There is a process to follow in order to meet the various closing dates, so please read carefully:
- Applicants will first need to make a formal application for post-graduate research admission by Monday 28 January 2013 at the latest so that we can process the application.
- Once you have received your Application Number, please complete the online Application Form for University Scholarships by Friday 1 February 2013 at 12:00pm selecting the scholarship schemes for which you wish to be considered. You will receive a copy of your application by email. If you need to make any changes to your scholarship application once you have submitted it, please email pgr-scholarships@sheffield.ac.uk
The following pieces are required for both the admission application and the application for scholarships:
- a research proposal of approximately 500 words. We strongly recommend that you discuss the content of your research proposal with your prospective supervisor. Indicatively, we would expect the outline of your research proposal to present the aim and objectives of the research, key research questions, the context for the research, initial ideas on the research methodology and potential contribution to knowledge.
- a CV, with details about: a) your nationality and your country of normal residence. Please also detail the dates and locations of any extended periods (excluding holidays) that you have spent living or working outside of your normal country of residence; b) the institutions you have attended (or are attending) and the courses you have taken; c) information about any employment, work or professional experience relevant to your proposed programme of study.
- a supportive statement of 250 words describing how your motivation, skills and achievements demonstrate potential to engage in and complete a worthwhile doctorate.
- two academic references.

The closing date for these scholarship applications is 1 February 2013 at 12:00pm.
Successful students will be sent an award letter by email, by R&IS, by the end of April. They will be required to accept their award by completing a simple online form within two weeks of the offer letter being emailed.

Fully-funded ESRC/DTC studentship in Education (EU/UK applicants only)
The School of Education has been awarded one Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) studentship through the White Rose Doctoral Training Centre, a major new collaboration between the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield and York.
Award details
- Fees (UK/EU) and a full stipend at the RCUK rate (£13,590 in 2011-12)
- A Research Training Support Grant (RTSG) (£750/year during only the 3-year PhD period of study).
This studentship is available for either:
- A four-year programme, which consists of an integrated research training Master’s followed by three years of PhD study;
- A three-year PhD study for candidates who have already completed an appropriate Master’s degree or research training programme.
- Who can apply
- Awards are open to UK and EU. EU applicants are eligible for the fee only component of the award, unless they have established residence in the UK for at least three years. They will also need to satisfy the School’s English language requirements for postgraduate study.
- Applicants for the studentship should hold or expect to achieve a First Class degree award, and/or a Distinction in a related Master’s degree. Applicants who hold a good 2:1 in their first degree will be considered on merit.

Applicants are required to follow the same procedure and with the same closing dates as outlined in the University of Sheffield scholarships competition section.
The School will inform the applicant who has been nominated for the award by the end of February, however the award will be confirmed by the White Rose Academic Quality Committee in April 2012.
