Centre for the Study of Educational Development and Professional Lives
The Centre for the Study of Educational Development and Professional Lives brings together researchers involved in three main areas of educational research in the national and wider global context:
- teaching and learning, education policy and curriculum
- using auto/biographical approaches to the study of aspects of teachers’ lives and careers
- theoretical/philosophical enquiry
Centre members share a commitment to conducting critical and transformative enquiry and to investigating conditions for, and influences on, the part played by education (in its broadest sense) in the quest for social justice. There is also a strong strand of work focusing on the development of contextually appropriate, ethical research methodology and practice.
Activities
Centre members are engaged in a range of activities. These include:
- CSEDPL seminars.
- Philosophy seminars: a seminar series titled 'Contesting Education and Research', run in partnership with the Philosophy of Education Society of Great Britain. This monthly event invites a range of national and international speakers to critically consider issues relevant to the study of education and its research.
- Philosophy reading group, open to all.
- Centre members are actively involved in the annual Discourse, Power, Resistance conference and international DPR community.
- A Colloquium in which teacher-researchers showcased their school-based research studies completed as part of the MA in Applied Professional Studies in Education Programme (MA APSE).
- Centre members make an important contribution to the School's programmes by conducting research-lead teaching and directing the full time Masters, the MA in Applied Professional Studies and the Sheffield EdD.
