Research Groups and Facilities

Our range of experimental facilities includes EPSRC´s National Centre for III-V Technologies, which operates state-of-the-art semiconductor growth and processing equipment, housed in an extensive new clean-room complex.
The Semiconductor Materials and Devices research group also hosts a state-of-the-art, aberration-corrected, ultrahigh resolution field-emission gun transmission electron microscope, a focused ion beam milling facility and electron beam lithographic equipment.
The Electrical Machines and Drives research group has specialist facilities for the design and manufacture of electro-magnetic machines (wire-eroder, magnetiser, finite element analysis software), several advanced dynamometer test cells, a high-speed motor test pit and environmental test chambers. The group also has capabilities for electronic packaging and EMC testing facilities. Our department is home to the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre for Advanced Electrical Machines and Drives, and Sheffield-Siemens Wind Power Research Centre.
The Communications research group hosts several advanced anechoic chambers for antenna design and materials characterisation. In addition we have an outdoor free-field range facility at our Buxton site. There is also a laboratory for the calibrated RF dosimetry of tissue such as stem cells, to assess any pathogenic effects of electromagnetic radiation from mobile phones and extensive CAD electromagnetic analysis tools.
