MSc. in Electronic and Electrical Engineering

Electronic engineering has been a catalyst to the progress in science and engineering for many years. Electronic devices and systems are used in every aspect of science and engineering ranging from space exploration, atomic nucleus analysis, DNA profiling to domestic appliances such as televisions, microwave ovens and DVD systems. Industrial and commercial enterprises such as financial institutions, manufacturing plants, the railway network and the national power supply grid all rely on computer based electronics to monitor and control the state of their systems. This postgraduate qualification in Electronic Engineering provides a clear understanding of the fundamental principles and the working concept of the electronic building blocks and the circuits / systems in which they operate. This includes their functionality, performance, and limitations.
This course is run by the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at Sheffield, which is a department that is internationally recognised for excellent research and high teaching quality. The modules comprising the degree are delivered by expert academic staff who are active at the forefront of research in many aspects of electronic engineering, including the development of high performance nanostructure electronic devices, design of high performance motors and drive electronics, development of next-generation communication and radar systems, and the design and systems incorporation of novel integrated circuits.
This programme is designed to provide graduates from with a thorough understanding of electronic devices and circuits and the systems in which they operate. The programme is flexible in allowing students to select the areas in which they wish to develop their expertise. The course will allow graduates from an Electronic Engineering background to develop their skills further as well as allowing able students from other numerate degree backgrounds to build up a strong expertise in this area to complement their original undergraduate study. Most graduates gain employment in the commercial/industrial sector but a significant minority embark on further studies leading to a PhD, either at Sheffield or elsewhere.
The Electronic and Electrical Engineering Department, which carries out all the administration for this programme, received a 90% overall satisfaction rating from its students in the 2008 National Student Survey. The recent RAE 2008 results confirm a position as one of the leading EEE departments in the UK. The research of over 92% of its academic staff was submitted to the recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008), the results of which were published on 18 December 2008. 60% of the Department´s research activity was classed as either world-leading or internationally excellent, and nearly all (95%) was classed as being internationally recognised and higher.
Admission Requirements
Students require a UK Bachelors degree or an equivalent international degree qualification to enter this programme. In addition to applications from Electronic and Electrical Engineering graduates, applications are welcome from graduates of most of the disciplines that involve a high degree of mathematical competence, such as Physics, Mathematics and other branches of Engineering. For students with an Electronics based degree, a second or first class honours standard (or equivalent qualification) is required, with students holding a lower second equivalent being considered more carefully. For those entering the programme with less core electronics experience the equivalent of an upper second class honours degree is generally a minimum requirement. Those with industrial experience are considered on an individual basis.
For international students, general university requirements regarding English qualifications must also be satisfied. The current minimum English requirement for applicants is IELTS 6.5 (with no less than 6 in each component).
