Christmas 2012 Bank Holiday and Closure Day Information

The University closure days for the 2012–2013 academic session will be 27, 28 and 31 December 2012.

In recognition of everyone’s effort in achieving The Times Higher University of the Year, there will be an additional closure day on 24 December 2012.

For general information, the University bank holiday and closure dates for Christmas 2012 will fall between Monday 24 December 2012 and Tuesday 1 January 2013 inclusive.

The details are:

The arrangements for closing buildings at Christmas are as follows:
 
The majority of buildings will be closed and locked down at 6pm on Friday 21 December 2012 and re-opened at 8am on Wednesday 2 January 2013. 
 
Heating will be turned down to frost protection levels during this time where possible and practical.
 
Details of exceptions and changes to services that will apply are as follows:

Estates & Facilities Management (EFM)
 
•    Access -  Any staff requiring out of hours access to support essential research activities during the Christmas break must advise their departmental manager or laboratory superintendent and provide their name and details of the building they wish to gain access to.  All information must then be forwarded onto Rachel Taylor (r.taylor@sheffield.ac.uk) Tel:  29230 by 17 December 2012, who will in turn brief colleagues in Security Services of authorised access.  All essential staff requiring access must have already attended out of hours training and departments are strongly advised to complete risk assessments for the activities that are being undertaken during the close down.  Any access queries during the closedown period should be directed to the Control Room on 0114 222 4085.
 
•    Security Services will operate the usual service at both Campus and Residences locations throughout.
 
•    Firth Court, Sir Frederick Mappin Building and North Campus will be accessible and staffed by portering staff throughout.
 
•    EFM Helpdesk will close to enquiries over the counter for concessionary travel tickets from 4pm on Thursday 20 December and for Helpdesk requests and keys at 3pm on Friday 21 December.
 
•    On call arrangements for EFM and CiCS will be in operation throughout the period and will be co-ordinated by Campus Control (Ext 24085).
 
•    Should your department need to lock any door access areas additional to the closure periods for Christmas parties etc. Please can card access requestors contact cardaccessefm@sheffield.ac.uk giving 5 working days’ notice.

Saturday 29 Dec - All facilities open as normal (bouldering wall closed for annual maintenance)
Sunday 30 Dec - All facilities open as normal
New Year’s Eve (31 Dec) - Closed
New Year’s Day (1 Jan) - Closed
Wednesday 2 Jan - All facilities open as normal
 
Food and Cafe Outlets

CiCS

Library and IT Services
 
•    Information Commons will be open as usual 24 hours throughout the period, but on a self service basis only, for students and staff.  The Health Sciences Library will also be open for a limited period.  Operating times are available at http://www.shef.ac.uk/library/libsites
 
•    Santander - will be closed from 21 December 2012 and re open on 7 January 2013.
