Recycling
Recycling at the University of Sheffield
Most people are familiar with the separate bins which have been put in place for the Paper and Card Recycling Scheme. There are also corporate procedures in place to deal with many other types of waste- from Winchester bottles and WEEE to printer cartridges (see other pages in this section for information on how to dispose of these waste streams).
Adding these schemes together shows that in 2009/10, 442.45 tonnes of waste were streamed for recycling here on campus (see tables below).
Paper
The vast majority of University buildings now have separate bins for the Paper and Card recycling scheme. Staff and students’ enthusiastic adoption of the scheme has seen the amount of paper being recycled on campus rocket from 21.17 tonnes in 2007/08 to 192.52 tonnes in 2009/10.
Additional paper recycling bins can be requested by emailing waste@sheffield.ac.uk.
Paper confidential waste should be disposed of separately.
Increasing recycling year on year
The tables below show how a combination of using the Dirty MRF (see here)and schemes to stream recyclable materials at source have hugely boosted our recycling and recovery rate.
