Pre-sessional Academic English Course

    Our Pre-sessional courses are for students who are preparing to study at the University of Sheffield. They are intensive Academic English courses concentrating on the skills required to study successfully at university.

    We have courses of 17 weeks, 10 weeks, 6 weeks or 4 weeks.

    The courses include 21 hours of tuition and practice per week in the following areas:
    • Academic Reading
    • Academic Writing
    • Academic Listening
    • Presentation and Seminar Skills
    • Research Skills (including library visit)
    • Lectures and Note-taking Skills (visiting lecturers Wednesday pm)
    • Options classes - students choose from a range of options (see below)
    All Pre-sessional English students are asked to do a written project during their stay. The project should be based on an area of their own studies and should be researched in the University library. Individual tutorials are offered to give students guidance and help with the project.

    Options classes usually include:
    Grammar and Vocabulary Consolidation
    Social English and Pronunciation
    Background to Britain
    IELTS/USEPT Examination Preparation

    Students choose an option during Week 1 of the course. Please note: because we are constantly updating and improving our courses, the list of available options may not be exactly the same as described here.

    Pre-sessional students will be offered an opportunity to take The University of Sheffield English Proficiency Test (USEPT) towards the end of the course. The test is accepted by most University of Sheffield departments as an alternative to IELTS for entry purposes.

    All students are entitled to use the University's computer facilities - including internet access and email - free of charge during their stay.
