Part-time English Language Classes

Open to all, students, staff and members of the public, the ELTC offers fee-paying part-time classes to improve your English and prepare for an internationally recognised Cambridge ESOL or IELTS exam.

Web-Part-time-classes-front-page2.jpg The ELTC is authorised to run University of Cambridge ESOL and IELTS exams. All our staff are qualified and experienced English language teachers. Our Centre is very modern, with spacious classrooms equipped with the latest technology and learning resources.

Levels



We currently offer 7 different part-time classes at 3 different levels, some preparing for 4 optional University of Cambridge ESOL and IELTS exams. Furthermore, you can take your University of Cambridge ESOL or IELTS exam at the ELTC here in Sheffield.

GENERAL ENGLISH

4) Cambridge English: First (FCE)

5) Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE)

6) Cambridge English: Proficiency (CPE)*

7) IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

*Please note that Post-Advanced and CPE classes are often mixed due to numbers at that level - you will be told before you register if that is going to happen.

Course Details

1) Upper-Intermediate - General English

A class for learners that want to improve their general speaking, writing, listening and reading skills, as well as grammar , vocabulary and pronunciation. A course book is used, together with suggestions from the course participants on what areas of language they want to focus on. This class is suitable for those students not wanting to prepare for an exam or those not quite ready to take FCE.

Entry Levels IELTS 5.0+, Cambridge PET or B1/B2 or equivilant.

2) Advanced - General English

A class for learners that want to improve and master their general speaking, writing, listening and reading skills, as well as gain excellent control over their grammar , vocabulary and pronunciation. A course book is used, together with suggestions from the course participants on what areas of language they want to focus on. This class is suitable for those students not wanting to prepare for an exam or those not quite ready to take CAE.

Entry Levels IELTS 6.5+, Cambridge FCE or B2/C1 or equivilant.

3) Post-Advanced - General English

A class for learners that want to master their general speaking, writing, listening and reading skills, as well as gain sophistication in their grammar , vocabulary and pronunciation. A course book is used, together with suggestions from the course participants on what areas of language they want to focus on. This class is suitable for those students not wanting to prepare for an exam or those not quite ready to take CPE.

Entry Levels IELTS 7.5+, Cambridge CAE or C1/C2 or equivilant.

4) Cambridge English: First (FCE)

This class is an exam preparation class focussing on the 5 test papers; Speaking, Writing, Listening and Reading, as well as Use of English (Grammar and Vocabualry). Work is done on exam techniques and strategies, along with language improvement from analysis of the exam practice. An exam text book is used, together with supplementary materials in the class and online. FCE is an exam for people who can use everyday written and spoken English in a variety of situations. It is an ideal exam for people who want to use English for initial steps into work or study in an English-speaking context.

(IELTS 5.5+, CEFR B2 or equivalent)

5) Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE)

This class is an exam preparation class focussing on the 5 test papers; Speaking, Writing, Listening and Reading, as well as Use of English (Grammar and Vocabualry). Work is done on exam techniques and strategies, along with language improvement from analysis of the exam practice. An exam text book is used, together with supplementary materials in the class and online.CAE is a high-level qualification that is officially recognised by universities, employers and governments around the world and shows the level of English required for demanding academic and professional settings.

(IELTS 7.0+, CEFR C1 or equivalent)

6) Cambridge English: Proficiency (CPE)

This class is an exam preparation class focussing on the 5 test papers; Speaking, Writing, Listening and Reading, as well as Use of English (Grammar and Vocabualry). Work is done on exam techniques and strategies, along with language improvement from analysis of the exam practice. An exam text book is used, together with supplementary materials in the class and online.  CPE is Cambridge ESOL's highest level exam. It is aimed at people who use English for professional or study purposes that require a highly developed language competence. It is also demonstrates holders can expertly manipulate the English language.

(IELTS 8.0+, CEFR C2 or equivalent)

7) IELTS - International English Language Testing System

IELTS is the world’s leading English language proficiency test, taken by over 1.7 million people each year. IELTS (Academic) assesses all of your English skills — reading, writing, listening and speaking, and is designed to reflect how you will use English at study. It is used for entry to Universities all over the world, including Sheffied. You are advised that the classes are best suited to those students with little or know experience of IELTS or those that want to refresh their skills. It is not suitable for those already taking an IELTS preparation course or who have a very strong understanding of the test.

Entry Levels (IELTS 5.0-6.5) B1-B2 or equivilant.

Dates and Times

A 10-week course for all levels, from 5.30-7.30pm on Mondays and Wednesdays, runs twice a year. The next course starts in October 2013.

Start Date: Monday 7th October 2013

End Date: Wednesday 11th December 2013

Optional Exam Date FCE (Computer-based) and CAE: Saturday 14th December 2013

Optional Exam Date CPE: Thursday 5th December 2013

Speaking exams for FCE, CAE and CPE will be held on different days around the dates above.  These will be confirmed nearer the time. 

Further courses will be offered from February to May 2014 or at other times if enough interest.

Enrolment

Applications should be received by Friday 4th October 2013. You may only miss the first week of the course and the last date of entry is Monday 14th October 2013.

To enrol for a place on the course, you now need to come one of the course registration evenings and bring any evidence of your English level (e.g. English certificate) if you have any. You will complete a written task and have a spoken interview. We will then discuss with you which class and Cambridge exam is best suited to you, taking in to account your preference.

The enolment dates and times will be sent to your after you complete the application form.

Fees

Fees for all levels are £395 including tuition, study book, practice test resources and extra learning materials. You will also receive a University of Sheffield student card, giving you access to the University facilities, including library and computer systems, for the duration of the course.

If you enter for the optional Cambridge ESOL or IELTS exam at the ELTC, you must also pay a Cambridge exam fee. Currently exam fees are £105 for FCE, CAE and CPE and £135 for IELTS.

All fees must be paid in advance before you start the course.
