DVD Library
The DVD Library is an excellent resource located on the second floor of the Jessop West building. It holds hundreds of DVDs and some videos, including the set texts for postgraduate coures and further research materials, all of which can be borrowed free of charge by students. It is usually open for a few hours in the middle of the day (currently 12 noon-2.30 pm Monday-Thursday: see notices in the main building). The library is staffed by graduate students, and overseen by Dr Rayner, assisted by other members of staff with an interest in film; its catalogue can be viewed as a hard copy in the library itself.
The Catalogue
A printed catalogue is available for viewing in the DVD Library. Films are listed in alphabetical order, followed by the director's name. DVDs are catalogued numerically, and these numbers are in the first column of the catalogue.
Rules for Students
- The DVD Library is a free service provided for all students of the School of English.
- An online catalogue is under development and will eventually be available on a DVD Library website in addition to the catalogues available in the library itself.
- The Library is open Monday to Thursday, from 12.00-12.30pm during the semester. During holidays please be sure to check the opening hours, which will be posted on the front door of the library and around the School of English.
- You may borrow up to THREE DVDs at any one time.
- DVDs from the catalogue may be kept for ONE WEEK. There are also a number of copies of set films for department courses, used as primary sources for teaching, and these can be borrowed for ONE DAY ONLY (OVERNIGHT).
- School DVDs in your possession are the property of the University and should be treated with care and respect for other library users. In the case of loss of destruction of DVDs, the student shall be required to pay for the product.
- You will be contacted via e-mail if you do not return DVDs after a substantial amount of time (usually about three weeks). If you do not return the DVDs by the time you finish your course, you may not be able to graduate until you do.
- Students borrow DVDs/videos at their own risk, and the School of English will not be held responsible caused to machines by faulty tapes etc.
Guidelines for Staff
- The Library is open Monday to Thursday, from 12.00-2.30 during the semester. During holidays please be sure to check the opening hours, which will be posted on the front door of the library and around the School of English. It is requested that you do not access the DVD Library without the presence of one of the Librarians to document your borrowings.
- The DVD Library catalogue is available in the library itself.
- Tell your students to join the library as soon as possible after the beginning of term. Encourage them to work with set films as far in advance of deadlines as possible, to avoid undue demand around submission dates.
- Recommendations or requests for purchasing should be made to Jonathan Rayner and Sandra Henry.
- In the case of loss or destruction of DVDs, you will be asked to pay for the product. Although staff borrowers are not subject to the same time restrictions as students, if you do not return videos promptly you will be asked to return them at the end of the semester in which you have borrowed them.
Thanks for using the DVD Library. We hope to continue to improve this facility for student and staff members alike.
