Funding and Finances
This is a hot topic and you will no doubt have questions about student loans, tuition fees and the Erasmus grant. You should find the answers to many of your queries on this web page.
Student Loan
Your Erasmus period does not affect your eligibility to apply for a Student Loan.
However, you must make it clear on your Student Loan application that you will be spending time abroad as part of your degree and whether your exchange/placement will be funded through Erasmus.
If you are not sure whether your period abroad will be classed as Erasmus, please consult our web page concerning the eligibility criteria:
If you receive a form from Student Finance asking for the University to confirm your period abroad plans, please contact Jackie Parkin in the Taught Programmes Office:

Help! My Student Loan assessment is much lower than usual!
The tuition fee part of your Student Loan should be in line with what you have been asked to pay (see 'Tuition Fees' below).
The maintenance part or any grants you are normally eligible for should not be reduced or taken away.
If you feel that you have been unfairly assessed by Student Finance, you can ask to be re-assessed.
If you do ask to be re-assessed, please point Student Finance to the Erasmus Guidance chapter on the Student Finance England webpages:

Tuition Fees
As an Erasmus student, you should not be requested to pay any tuition fees to your host institution.
The tuition fee payments to the University of Sheffield will vary depending on your arrangements:
UK/EU Students (current policy)
- If you are spending an entire academic year abroad as an Erasmus student, you will not be requested to pay any tuition fees to the University of Sheffield
- If you are spending an entire academic year abroad, but only half of it on Erasmus, you will have to pay half the amount of the normal tuition fees to the University of Sheffield
- If you are in Sheffield for one semester and on an Erasmus exchange/placement in the other semester, you will have to pay the full amount to the University of Sheffield as per normal
International Fee-Paying Students (current policy)
You will be liable to pay 50% of your normal tuition fee for an entire year abroad and the full amount if you go abroad for just one semester.
Tuition Fee Loan
You should only apply for a tuition fee loan if you actually need one. If you only have to pay half tution fees to the University of Sheffield, you should only apply for half the normal amount of tuition fee loan.
