The European Landscape Convention, a treaty of the Council of Europe, emphasises the importance of Europe's landscapes both for their cultural and heritage values, and for the benefits relating to quality of life and sustainable economic development.

Since joining the convention in 2007, the UK has made a commitment to recognise landscape in law, and to protect, manage and plan future activities in specific ways.

Paul Selman, Department of Landscape, said: "Now that so many countries are starting to implement the Convention, it is important to share our experiences relating to early successes and difficulties. The Expert Seminar, which was sponsored by leading government agencies as well as the Landscape Research Group, gave us the ideal opportunity to share experiences and discuss future issues affecting us all."
