University celebrates grant award

The University of Sheffield has been awarded substantial funding for
its postgraduate research studentships across the Arts and Humanities
and Social Sciences subjects from the Arts and Humanities Research
Council (AHRC).

The University of Sheffield was one of the most successful institutions
out of the 48 universities who received funding, excelling in
Archaeology, Philosophy, History and English Language and Literature.

Spread across five years, the University will receive the funding for 72
PhDs and 110 Masters studentships across the faculties of Arts and
Humanities and Social Sciences, allowing future students to compete to
win research grants.

The University of Sheffield received the funding on the basis that it
has shown strong evidence that it excels at strategic planning and
delivery of very high quality postgraduate research and training within
the arts and humanities and social sciences subjects in the past and are
set to do the same in the future.

Professor Phil Powrie, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Arts and
Humanities at the University of Sheffield, commented: “We are extremely
pleased with the funding as it shows the real strength of the arts and
humanities and social sciences subjects here at the University. The
grant will enable the faculties to build and strengthen what are already
regarded as cutting-edge research projects, and further nurture its
collaborative research and knowledge transfer efforts.”

Professor Philip Esler, Chief Executive of the AHRC, added: “In its role
of assisting the UK arts and humanities community to continue in their
world-leading production of research, the AHRC is delighted to be able
to fund so many outstanding postgraduates in our new Block Grant
Partnerships Scheme with universities like Sheffield, where postgraduate
training and institutional research strategies are now closely integrated.”
