Lord Mayor declares Jessop site open
The Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Graham Oxley, visited the
University of Sheffield yesterday (Thursday 18 June 2009) to cut the red
ribbon and officially open the new Jessop Development.
The £33 million completed regeneration and development work, undertaken
by the University in the Portobello area of the city, includes the
recently opened Soundhouse, the Jessop West and the Jessop building.
The magnificently restored and renovated Jessop building, originally the
Jessop Hospital for Women, is the new home for the Department of Music.
The Soundhouse, a unique rubber-clad building, houses ultra-modern
practice studios, rehearsal rooms and recording facilities and is
dedicated space for the Department of Music. The Jessop West building is
state-of-the-art and designed to maximise energy efficiency. It provides
leading facilities for the University's Department of History, the
School of English and the School of Modern Languages and Linguistics
(SOMLAL).
Professor Phil Powrie, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Arts and
Humanities at the University of Sheffield, said: “The Arts and
Humanities departments have been spread over the campus before now, but
this new central site has allowed us to bring our three largest
departments closer together. With the Department of Music moving into
our recently renovated Jessop Building and the University´s Humanities
Research Institute positioned opposite Jessop West, we have established
a creative hub for the Faculty, which is already benefiting both
students and staff.”
Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Graham Oxley, commented on the day:
“The new developments are a great addition to the Sheffield City
landscape and bring the people in the Faculty closer to the heart of the
city. I am very impressed and pleased with the amount of care and work
that has gone into these buildings, each unique in their own way.”
