Monday 08 June, 19:30 Sheffield Cathedral MOZART REQUIEM: CONCERT + TALK

Sheffield University Chamber Choir
Nigel Simeone (conductor)
Professor Simon Keefe (speaker)

Sheffield University Chamber Choir and Orchestra perform Mozart's
devastatingly sublime requiem, up there with the greatest choral works
of all time. This will be accompanied by a talk with leading Mozart
scholar, Professor Simon Keefe.

Mozart´s Requiem, left incomplete at the composer´s death in December
1791, has always held an extremely prominent place in our collective
musical consciousness. This talk will focus not only on Mozart´s
contributions, but also on Franz Xaver Suessmayr's completion of the
work in early 1792. Long subjected to serious criticism, Suessmayr´s
completion was positively received in the early decades of the
nineteenth century (after first publication in 1800), thus inviting
modern-day re-evaluation of it in light of historically-based aesthetic
criteria.
