SWFC/ World Cup Knowledge Transfer Project

As part of activities around the conference 'Visual/Physical: Discourses on Sport and Performance Cultures', organised by The Department of Hispanic Studies and to take place at The University of Sheffield on 1-2 July, we are running a knowledge tranfer project in conjunction with Sheffield Wednesday FC, and supported by the University's Rapid Response Knowledge Transfer Fund.

SWFC have in recent weeks been running the Africa Cup, a football tournament for Sheffield primary schools which sees the winning team flown to South Africa to watch a match at this year's World Cup. Schools were selected to take part on the basis of videos they produced in support of the Back the Bid campaign to bring the World Cup to England in 2018/2022, with 32 schools assigned to a participating country at this year's World Cup. The schools are looking to take this opportunity to learn more about their assigned country, with the ultimate aim of producing a short video presentation on 'their' country. The best videos will be shown at an event at SWFC on Saturday 3rd July, followed by a live screening of that day's quarter final. As part of the university's drive to share the benefits of its research with the wider community, we are looking for either students or staff from the University of Sheffield to visit the schools involved, in order to help the pupils to learn about the country that they have been assigned. We would ideally like one or two people to visit each school, if possible a native of the assigned country, or someone studying or researching that country, although anyone with a strong interest in a particular country would be welcome. Participants would be expected to make 2-3 visits to their school in May-June, and there is a bursary available to recompense participating students/staff.

If you would like to take part in this project, please write to David Powell at spp07dcp@sheffield.ac.uk, stating which country you would be able to assist with (see list below).
