Sheffield University Professor is 'Archaeologist of the Year'
On Saturday 27 February, Prof. Mike Parker Pearson was presented with
the award of 'Archaeologist of the Year' for 2010 at an award ceremony
at the British Museum in London.
His project, the Stonehenge Riverside Project, also received the award for
this year's best research project in archaeology.
The Stonehenge Riverside Project has been funded by the Arts& Humanities
Research Council, the National Geographic Society and many other institutions.
Prof. It is co-directed with Josh Pollard, Colin Richards, Julian Thomas, Chris
Tilley and Kate Welham. Parker Pearson has just started a new project -
'Feeding Stonehenge' (co-directed with Umberto Albarella, Oliver Craig and Jane
Evans) - which is also funded by the AHRC.
The awards were presented by Prof. Brian Fagan of the University of California,
Santa Barbara. The awards ceremony was hosted by Current Archaeology magazine
and sponsored by Andante Travels. The awards were made on the basis of voting
by Current Archaeology's 28,000 readers. Runners-up for archaeologist of the
year were Prof. Sir Barry Cunliffe of Oxford University and Prof. Clive Gamble
of Royal Holloway College.
