Research and innovation in the Arts and Humanities at Sheffield is vibrant and successful by any measure. We are fully committed to our research and its dissemination and take pride in what we do. Sheffield is a research-intensive university, and the faculty plays a major role in making Sheffield the world-class research institution it is.
Ambition in research and innovation
In Sheffield we believe firmly in the Arts and Humanities research endeavour as a common cause. Starting with a strong discipline base, we work together, with other researchers within the university and beyond, and with a range of external partners to understand and to challenge what it is to be human.
Our research landscape
The University of Sheffield is a member of the Russell Group of research-intensive universities, ranked 8th in the UK in the Shanghai Jiao Tong Academic Ranking of World Universities. According to the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise the University is ranked 5th in the UK in terms of the number of subject areas with 50% or more of their research judged to be 'world-leading' (4*) or 'internationally excellent' (3*).
The performance by the Arts and Humanities in RAE 2008 was particularly impressive with 9 out of our 10 subject areas having 50%+ of their research in the 4* and 3* categories. The faculty generated £1,8 million of research income in 2007/08 and supervised 212 FTE PGR students. The Arts and Humanities disciplines exemplify and take pride in a dynamic range of research and innovation activities from long-term team projects to individual outreach activities.
Our vision
We pursue the broadest range of research and innovation activities and always emphasise the relevance and appropriateness of our activities. We reflect critically on all aspects of human society and culture, past, present, and future, and on the process of reflection itself. We investigate cultures and languages near and far, their ideas, texts, artefacts and landscapes, and we create the cultural capital of the future.
Working individually and collaboratively, we continue to develop innovative methods of enquiry within and across our disciplines. Our openness to enquiry and independence in asking and answering questions enables further understanding, allowing us to work creatively and to enhance our disciplines.
