Our research landscape

The University of Sheffield is a member of the Russell Group of research-intensive universities, ranked 10th in the UK in the 2011 Shanghai Jiao Tong Academic Ranking of World Universities. According to the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise the University is ranked 5th in the UK in terms of the number of subject areas with 50% or more of their research judged to be 'world-leading' (4*) or 'internationally excellent' (3*).

The performance by the Arts and Humanities in RAE 2008 was particularly impressive with 9 out of our 10 subject areas having 50%+ of their research in the 4* and 3* categories.

The faculty generated £2.7 million of research income in 2010/11 and supervised 195 FTE PGR students.

The Arts and Humanities disciplines exemplify and take pride in a dynamic range of research and innovation activities from long-term team projects to individual outreach activities.
