Faculty secures funding for new approach to PhD training

Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs) and Industrial Doctorate Centres (IDCs) supply skilled people able to address science and engineering research related problems for the benefit of the UK economy. DTCs and IDCs provide a radical alternative to the traditional 'lone scholar' PhD route, because each year a cohort of 10 PhD students undertake activities, projects and transferable skills training together.

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) has invested £250million in establishing 44 Centres for Doctoral Training, with the aim of rapidly establishing a pre-eminent international reputation for doctoral training embedded within excellent research environments. The University of Sheffield has secured 5 Centres for Doctoral Training.

Professor Mike Hounslow, Pro Vice Chancellor for Engineering at the University of Sheffield, said: "Securing funding for five Centres confirms our excellent reputation for engineering research. These Centres will enable us to deliver truly world-class training in line with our aspiration to provide the best research experience for doctoral students and our strategic vision to address global challenges facing society, today and in the future".
