The Wolfson Light Microscopy Facility

The Wolfson Light Microscopy Facility

The Light Microscopy Facility (LMF) is an open access facility of the Faculty of Science at the University of Sheffield. It offers a range of microscopes, including confocal (scanning and spinning disc), widefield and deconvolution microscopes. There are also two super-resolution light microscopes, one based on Structured Illumination, another on Localisation microscopy and a light sheet microscope. The microscopes are available to all members of the Faculty of Science. Users from outside the faculty with no access to the type of microscopy needed are welcome as are external user. Please get in touch with us to discuss your needs.

The Facility is located on B Floor in the North Wing of Firth Court and can be accessed by using the far right corner entrance when coming from the quad (the green central area of Firth Court).

The diversity of systems available offers a range of techniques. We offer training in the use of the systems and advice for:

  • Brightfield, DIC, phase contrast imaging
  • Fluorescence Imaging
  • Fast Live cell Imaging
  • Multi colour Imaging
  • Photoactivation/ Photobleaching (e.g. FRAP)
  • TIRF imaging
  • Deconvolution
  • Super-resolution Microscopy (SIM/STORM/PALM)
  • Light Sheet Microscopy
  • Image Analysis

If you are interested in using microscopy for a project please get in touch and we will try to answer your questions, e.g. about which microscope to choose, appropriate sample preparation and relevant image analysis. For further information on the different systems, what they have been used for and how to access them, please use the links above.

Acknowledging the Wolfson Light Microscopy Facility

If you include any images obtained from the Wolfson Light Microscopy Facility within your published work please ensure that you acknowledge the Facility, stating for example: "Imaging work was performed at the Wolfson Light Microscopy Facility, using the [insert relevant type] microscope."

This will help to underpin the existence of the Wolfson Light Microscopy Facility by demonstrating its value to the research community and thereby enhance future funding applications.

On the page below you can find a list of recent publications containing data obtained within the Wolfson Light Microscopy Facility.
