Professional Development Day

Professional Development Day

Wednesday 13 November, The Edge, Endcliffe Village

There are hundreds of talented people working across the Faculty of Science, with a massive and diverse range of knowledge and experience. We all share the same purpose: to bring in the best students, produce the best research and enhance our world-class reputation. Later this year, staff in the Faculty of Science will be able to break from some of their usual routines and spend a day discovering new ways to get the most out of their work.

The Professional Development Day is being held for professional support staff across the seven departments and the central Faculty team. This is a chance for professional staff – for example clerical staff, administrators, managers and technicians – to get together, develop as individuals and improve as a Faculty.

Registration now open

You can now register your place at the Professional Development Day. Please fill in the registration form before Monday 30 September.

Pre-event Survey

Help shape the day by filling in the Pre-event Survey with your ideas and experiences.

Celebration of Achievement

Tell us about individual and team achievements, both inside and outside work, which you would like to share at the Development Day by answering the Celebration of Achievement question.

Why are we having a Professional Development Day?

One of the secrets to doing a good job is recognising where we can improve and learning from those around us. That's why we want to take the opportunity as a faculty team to think about how, where necessary, we can do things differently, making sure professional support staff have the career development opportunities they need to move to a different way of working.

At the heart of this process is understanding what we want to achieve as a faculty and how your role as a member of professional staff can help us meet our objectives. We can then turn those objectives into the tasks that each of us undertake day-to-day, and see how the jobs we do contribute to our collective success.

Programme overview

With that in mind, the Professional Development Day will allow you as professional support staff to take time out and celebrate your achievements, while working together to ask:

  • What does the Faculty of Science need to do to build on its successes and improve its position?
  • What do we as members of the Faculty, business units, teams and individuals need to do differently to make this happen?

Throughout the day we will be seeking your input to help us answer these questions. The programme sessions will also provide you with the opportunity to have your say about:

  • What are we doing well and what needs to be improved?
  • What does effective working look like and how do we know when we are achieving it?
  • What stops us from improving and how can we overcome these barriers?
  • What do we need to do to achieve the improvements we want?
  • What help, support or professional development opportunities do we need to adopt to achieve a different way of working?
  • How can we effectively share good practice across the Faculty?

There will also be a session by Andy Dodman, Director of Human Resources who will highlight current HR issues relevant to professional staff.
