prof1

The Faculty of Social Sciences is one of the largest and most respected centres of professional education in the country. If you join us, you will be amongst students studying Architecture, Business and Management, Education, Information Science, Journalism, Landscape Architecture, Law, Property Development, Social Work, and Town and Regional Planning. In total, the Faculty has around 2,800 undergraduates and 900 postgraduates – of whom about one-seventh are international – studying for professionally accredited qualifications across almost 60 courses. This opens up opportunities not only for becoming excellent in your own subject, but also appreciating the work of other professions with which you will engage throughout your career.

Our courses provide an education that combines professional competence with academic excellence. We promote a desire for critical thinking and lifelong learning, within a Faculty that has an exceptional reputation for teaching quality and research excellence. We realise that your competence to practise within your chosen profession is paramount, but we also believe that it is important for you to develop other knowledge and qualities that are embedded in Sheffield degrees. Our graduates are able to undertake research, work flexibly within interdisciplinary teams, critically reflect on their professional experience, apply the highest ethical standards, and understand how to use their professional standing to promote the wider social good.

Our courses prepare you for your future career by using exciting teaching methods that give you real insights into the work of your chosen profession. These include site visits, simulated workplace projects, role play, industry partnerships and online learning. Sometimes, students from different professional areas work together on projects in order to appreciate the complexities of real-world working in multi-professional teams. Equally importantly, you will be asked to reflect critically practical exercises and work experience, and relate them to academic theories and personal skills development.
