I am going on maternity/paternity/adoption leave
If you are going on Maternity/Paternity or Adoption leave, this can have an effect on your pension benefits.
The effect on your benefits will depend upon the type of leave you are taking.
- Paid Leave - if you are absent from work but are still receiving pay from the University (including full pay, half pay, statutory maternity pay and paid leave), contributions will continue to be paid to the Scheme, based on the pay you are actually receiving, and the period will count towards normal Pensionable Service.
- Unpaid Leave -if you are absent from work, and are NOT receiving any pay from the University, no contributions will be paid to the Scheme and, therefore, such periods will not count towards Pensionable Service. Upon returning to work, you can apply to have the unpaid leave treated as Pensionable Service. Please see the information on ‘I am returning from maternity/paternity/adoption leave’.
If you do not return to work after maternity/paternity/adoption leave, then USPS membership will usually end on the day your pay ceased.
