A Mediaeval Mystery

A former student and researcher in the French department has just published a historical novel based on the period she studied while at Sheffield. The Sins of the Father by Catherine Hanley (Quaestor2000 Publishing, 2009) is the first of a planned series of medieval detective novels featuring Edwin Weaver, a bailiff's son who is suddenly thrust into the world of early thirteenth-century war, politics and murder.

Catherine was an undergraduate in Sheffield, before going on to do a PhD in the Department. Her PhD thesis was published by Boydell and Brewer in 2003 as War and Combat 1150-1270: The Evidence from Old French Literature. She then became a Research Associate on the Partonopeus de Blois Electronic Edition Project, before moving away from Sheffield and branching out into fiction.

We look forward to the sequel to The Sins of the Father in 2010.
