MA in French Studies
Aims and Objectives of the Course
The MA in French Studies aims to give students the opportunity to develop their understanding of particular aspects of French language, literature and culture while enhancing their research and analytical skills. It is designed to accommodate students who see an MA as an end in itself, as well as those who are looking for research skills as a prelude to doctoral study.
By the end of the course, students should be able to demonstrate:
- broader and deeper knowledge of their chosen area(s) of study than that acquired at undergraduate level
- sound knowledge and critical understanding of the tools and methodologies of research in French Studies
- the ability to research independently, exploiting a full range of bibliographical and other tools, and to present the results of research cogently and coherently in written and oral form
- high-level transferable skills relevant to employment in a range of sectors, including enhanced self-directedness, analytical and critical thinking, problem-solving and time-and resource-management
- enhanced reflective practice in relation to academic study and career management
- Enhanced competence in productive and receptive language skills in French and, where appropriate, other languages
- The ability to conceive and draft a rigorous research proposal for further study
