Postgraduate studies: Masters
MA in French Studies (Research Track)
Aims and Objectives of the Course
The MA in French Studies (Research Track) aims to give students the opportunity to develop their understanding of particular aspects of French language, literature and culture while enhancing their research and analytical skills. Its flexible, two-pathway structure is designed to accommodate students who see an MA as an end in itself, as well as those who are looking for a Research Preparation Masters as a prelude to doctoral study. By the end of the course, students should be able to demonstrate:
- broader and deeper knowledge of their chosen area(s) of study than that acquired at undergraduate level
- sound knowledge and critical understanding of the tools and methodologies of research in French Studies
- the ability to research independently, exploiting a full range of bibliographical and other tools, and to present the results of research cogently and coherently in written and oral form
- high-level transferable skills relevant to employment in a range of sectors, including enhanced self-directedness, analytical and critical thinking, problem-solving and time-and resource-management
- enhanced reflective practice in relation to academic study and career management
- (for Pathway I) enhanced competence in productive and receptive language skills in French and, where appropriate, other languages
- (for Pathway 2) the ability to conceive and draft a rigorous research proposal for further study
MA Crossways in European Humanities (Mundus)
The MA in Crossways in European Humanities offers a programme of European languages, cultures and literatures, and is provided by a consortium of European universities.
The programme exists in a one year and two year format. Your first semester is spent at Sheffield. Semester 2 is spent at a partner institution (Perpignan, Bergamo, Lisbon, Santiago de Compostela, or Tübingen). You then either return to Sheffield to write your dissertation or, on the two year programme, spend semester 3 back in Sheffield and semester 4 in a partner institution where you will write your dissertation.
This programme has been designed by integrating the modules of a number of existing Masters programmes in the Universities of Sheffield, Bergamo, Lisbon, Perpignan, Santiago de Compostela and Tübingen.
We will fully support you in your choice of institution and modules.
This new programme is an exciting opportunity to obtain a prestigious, European-funded Masters qualification, with a period of study abroad.
As a student of this MA, you are eligible to compete for fee-waivers, University scholarships, and AHRC funding. Erasmus mobility funding is also available for the period abroad.
