The department has a thriving community of postgraduate students preparing MPhil/PhD theses or taking our MA in French Studies (Research Track) as preparation for doctoral study. We welcome enquiries from prospective research students whose interests match those of academic staff.

- Algerians in Sheffield: creating cultural identity
- The British Library manuscripts of the Roman de Troie
- Figure, space and movement in the works of Valérie Jouve and Jean Echenoz
- Symbolism and the Old French Partonopeus de Blois
- French-Russian writers in the 20th Century: exile and identity
- Comic technique in Hue de Rotelande's Ipomedon
- Gaps in meaning between spoken and subtitled dialogue in modern French cinema
Recent postgraduate research
Recently completed PhD research projects include:
- A study and partial edition of Froissart's Chronicles Book IV based on BL MS Harley 4379-80 (PhD)
- Ornithology in Seventeenth-Century France: J.B. Faultrier's Traitté Général des Oyseaux (cross-disciplinary PhD with the Department of Animal and Plant Sciences)
- A Study of Aimon de Varennes' Florimont
- The significance of work in the writing of Jean Giono (1929-1945)
- An Edition and Study of Besancon Municipal Library ms 864 (Jean Froissart's Chroniques, Book I, 'A' redaction)
