Biography

After graduating from the University of Birmingham in 1959, I spent the next two years researching my thesis on Voltairean aesthetics in Paris and Geneva. I was awarded the degree of PhD in 1963. After a year as a Lecteur in Montpellier, I was appointed Assistant Lecturer, and then Lecturer, in the Department of French in the University of Southampton. I stayed in Southampton until 1968 when I was invited to McMaster University in Canada. I worked in the Department of Romance Languages at McMaster for eight years as an Associate Professor, and then Professor. In 1976 I returned to the UK to take up the Chair and Headship of the Department of French at the University of Sheffield, and I remained Head of Department until 1997. In 1983 I was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Universite du Maine, and in 1997 I was made a Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Palmes Academiques. In 2005 I was appointed Research Professor, and in 2006 I became an Honorary Research Associate at the Voltaire Foundation in Oxford.

Research Interests

I am closely involved with the new edition of Voltaire´s Oeuvres complètes, currently in progress at the Voltaire Foundation. My main interests are in Voltairean aesthetics and political thought, Condorcet, the literature of emancipation.
