Undergraduate study in French
The French language is spoken by 270 million people worldwide – from arctic Canada, through Europe and Africa, to the islands of the south Pacific. French history and culture remain a key influence on the modern world – from fashion, cuisine and sport to the arts, philosophy and global politics.
At Sheffield we believe languages are about seeing as well as saying. Study French with us and you won't just become a confident user of a different language. You'll be a confident citizen of Europe. You'll understand the world and its people in a different and better way.

But as a department in our own right we're small enough to care. French at Sheffield is a close-knit community with a great sense of togetherness and friendship.
This means a student society – Le Cercle Français – that's buzzing with French-flavoured activities like film nights, cabaret, wine and cheese evenings, quizzes, karaoke and a trip to Paris in the spring. It means a spectacular annual highlight in the French play.
It means studying French at Sheffield isn't just an academically outstanding experience. It's also a journey of social and personal development that'll stay with you forever. And it's a lot of fun too.
