French Bursaries at the University of Sheffield

PerpignanHere at the Department of French we afford our students a wealth of opportunities both in and beyond the classroom. One of the ways we do this is by offering financial support through the annual Dr Marjorie Shaw Bursary.

What is the Dr Marjorie Shaw Bursary?

Marjorie ShawThanks to the generosity of the late Dr Marjorie Shaw (1915-2000), a former Senior Lecturer in the department, we are able to offer two sets of undergraduate bursaries for the year abroad: one to help students in financial need with the cost of living abroad, and the other to support a student who is doing voluntary work on their year abroad.

At postgraduate level, we have two scholarships of £7,700 (£4,200 towards tuition fees and £3,500 towards maintenance costs) for Taught MA students at the Department of French in 2012-2013.

The department is also creating a 3-year PhD studentship, which will be available in 2013-14.

Undergraduate Bursaries

Year abroad financial need bursary

Two bursaries each of £1000 will be awarded on application, to Level 2 students who have previously sought and obtained assistance from the University's Access to Learning Fund.

You must provide evidence of having successfully applied to the University's Access Learning Fund. If there are more applicants than available bursaries, recipients will be selected on the basis of progress made during Level 1.

Bursary for voluntary work

One bursary of £1000 will be awarded to a student who is undertaking voluntary work during the Year Abroad.

This will be awarded on a competitive basis if more than one candidate comes forward. You will be asked to write a 400 word statement detailing what you will be doing on your year abroad, and the contribution that this money will make to the community in which you will be working.

Applications for the bursaries should be made to the Head of French, Professor Jan Windebank.
