Excellence in Geography Teaching and Research

The Department of Geography has achieved high satisfaction ratings in the 2011 National Student Survey (NSS). Degrees in Physical Geography (98% satisfied) and Human Geography (91% satisfied) at the University of Sheffield continue to offer an excellent student experience. The 2011 NSS results again place us at the top of the Russell Group; a body of 20 leading UK universities which are committed to maintaining the very best research, an outstanding teaching and learning experience and unrivalled links with business and the public sector.
At the same time we can see that Excellence in our Teaching is driven by Excellence in Research that we undertake across the Geography discipline. Founded in 1908, the Department of Geography is one of the leading research departments in Geography in the UK. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, the University of Sheffield was amongst seven Russell Group universities that achieved the highest ratings for Geography, with 70% of our research judged world-leading or internationally excellent. With over 30 full-time academic staff, a graduate school of over 80 PhD and Masters Students, and more than 10 full-time researchers employed on research contracts at any one time, we are one of the largest and most innovative Geography departments in the UK
