How a legacy or donation can help the Department
The Department was founded in 1908 and is one of the oldest departments of Geography in the country. It is proud of its long tradition of teaching, research and scholarship, and of the enormous contributions its staff and alumni have made, not just to the discipline but to society in general, both at home and internationally. Many of our alumni will have benefited from the more generous support that students in higher education received in the past than is the case today. For overseas students the burden of fees is particularly high.
Yet, if the Department is to continue to play its world-class role it is vital that we continue to attract the very best overseas students to come to study at Sheffield. As part of the celebrations of our Centenary in 2008 the Department established a Centenary Fund, used to support those studying at Sheffield
By making a donation or leaving a legacy to the Department you can help us to support students who might not otherwise have the opportunity to study at Sheffield. Giving even a small proportion of your estate to the Department can have a significant impact on the educational opportunities we can provide.
The University's Development & Alumni Relations Office has prepared a special Legacy Brochure which provides guidance to people who are considering remembering the University in their Will and includes suggested wording for them to discuss with their solicitor. Supporters can specify leaving a bequest to the Department of Geography - and a legacy to the University is completely free of all inheritance tax because the University is an exempt charity.
To request a copy of the Legacy Brochure - or for further advice - please contact Miles Stevenson, the Director of Development on miles.stevenson@sheffield.ac.uk, 0114 222 1070, or at The Development & Alumni Relations Office, 267 Glossop Road, Sheffield, S10 2HB.
