35mm slide scanning

We now have a Nikon SuperCoolscan 5000ED film scanner, capable of scanning 35mm slides and negatives. With prior arrangement we can also scan APS negative film and glass microscope slides. The 5000ED is a dedicated film scanner, a world away from the slide scanning attachments you can get with flatbed scanners. It scans at 4,000ppi - as high a resolution as modern digital SLR cameras, and suitable for A3 reproduction from a 35mm slide. The most limiting factor for reproduction we often find is the grain of your original film! Colours are vivid, images are sharp; we can also often recapture the original colours of faded slides.

With this scanner we are able to offer a batch scanning service for 35mm slides and negatives at the cost of £2.00 per slide/frame. For this we will scan your slides at 4,000ppi (with dust and scratch removal), re-orientate, remove borders and save in both TIFF and JPEG formats, so you can add them to your digital collections just like any other digital photo. We return your slides together with a CD or data DVD of the digital images saved at three resolutions suitable for most uses (low resolution JPEG - screen/PowerPoint, medium-res JPEG - general use, high-res TIFF - printing and large reproduction), together with a zipped archive of the original scanner TIFF files. We can also take work from customers outside the University - but sadly, we then have to charge VAT.

To use the batch slide scanning service, you need to prepare your slides before submission:

Please note that some very thick glass slides are unsuitable for the batch scanner, and will need to be hand-processed at extra charge.

We can also add EXIF data (if provided) - time, date, location, etc etc to the digital file at extra charge.
