2008 - One hundred years of Geography at Sheffield
2008 was our Centenary Year, and to mark the year in appropriate style we put together a programme of events, including Centenary Day 19 July 2008 The Department welcomed back approximately 500 alumni, friends and former colleagues for an Open Day in the department and fundraising dinner. You can see pictures by following the link at the top-right of this page. To Understand Our World - A Centenary History. A book-length publication on the history of the Department Written by Paul White (Professor of European Geography and Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Teaching and Learning), To Understand Our World is a highly readable and packed full of anecdotes and stories, as well as full-colour photographs. It is available at a cost of £5, including postage and packing.See link left for more details. Centenary Lecture series See the link (left) for the full programme Centenary research expedition to Svalbard Following in the footsteps of Rudmose-Brown. The Department will be holding an evening event at the Royal Geographical Society, London, on the expedition. Details to follow. The key objective for the year was to raise money for our Centenary Fund, and the events were designed with this in mind. The Centenary Fund is to support the following activities: undergraduate field class bursaries, part-bursaries for MA and MSc students, fieldwork support for international postgraduate students.
