The Department of Geography, founded in 1908, is one of the oldest departments of its kind in the country. The department enjoys a long-standing international reputation for academic research by staff in a wide range of areas within human and physical geography. Top-rated research In the recent Research Assessment Exercise (2008) 95% of our research was rated as 'international standard'. With 70% of our research either 'internationally excellent' (50%) or 'world-leading' (20%), this puts the department firmly in the top-ten geography departments in the country in research terms, enhancing our previous excellent ratings (Grade 5) in the preceding two research assessment exercises. Teaching excellenceOur Teaching gained a rating of 'Excellent' in the HEFCE Teaching Quality Assessment. We are a large department with a vibrant community of undergraduates, postgraduates and post-doctoral researchers. The Department is housed in an award-winning, purpose-built six-floor building on the edge of Weston Park, lying close to the University Library, the new Information Commons, the Union of Students and central lecture theatres.
