Postgraduate (PhD) Studentships in the Department of Geography, University of Sheffield
The Department of Geography invites applications for admission to its Taught and Research Postgraduate Programmes. We have a number of studentship opportunities for September 2010 which are listed below. All studentships will be allocated at the same time with a deadline for completed applications to be received by 15 January 2010. According to the results of the independent 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, the Department is by all measures, within the top 10 Departments in the UK. It was also graded 5A in both the previous two Research Assessment Exercises. With over 30 full-time academic staff, a graduate school of over 50 PhD and Masters students, we are one of the largest Geography departments in the UK and a global leader in several research fields including Climate and Cryosphere, Drylands Research, Social and Cultural Geographies, and Social And Spatial Inequalities. The Faculty Prize Scholarships vary according to the circumstances of each applicant. They will include the cost of the tuition fees (or a contribution towards these) and an annual, tax-free maintenance stipend of up to £13,650. You cannot apply for scholarships until you have been accepted by the Department and have an admission number. Faculties are also able to offer a range of other awards at their discretion. Awards are tenable for a maximum of three years full-time and five years part-time subject to satisfactory progress. In addition, all PhD students at the University of Sheffield are entitled to apply for additional support from the Learned Societies fund towards the costs of attending up to three conferences and workshops per annum. Awards are open to UK, other EU and international applicants. University Prize Scholarships This is a University-wide competition. University Prize Scholarships cover the cost of the tuition fees and provides an annual, tax-free maintenance stipend of £15,500. The recipient will also receive a Research Training Support Grant of £2,000 to claim back expenses related to their research, such as travel, conferences, books, consumables, equipment, and other miscellaneous items. Applications will be reviewed by a panel from the relevant Faculty. The strongest candidates will be submitted into a University-wide competition, from which the Prize Scholarships will be awarded. Research Council Studentships (UK and other EU nationals only) ESRC 1+3 Quota studentships The deadline for application to the Department is 15 January 2010. You cannot apply for studentships until you have been accepted by the Department and have an admission number. The Department of Geography is an ESRC-recognised outlet as it has been allocated two fully funded "1+3" or "+3" studentships for the next academic year. "1+3" studentships A four-year award intended for those with no previous experience of research training. It involves a linked ESRC recognised research training Masters followed by a PhD (applied for together) and includes full payment of fees at UK/EU rate, a four-year maintenance grant (£13,290 tax-free per annum) and a Research Training Support Grant. "+3" studentships This award is for students who have already completed an ESRC-recognised research training Masters and is a three-year award that includes full payment of fees at UK/EU rate, a three-year maintenance grant (£13,290 tax-free per annum) and a Research Training Support Grant. All PhD students at the University of Sheffield are entitled to apply for additional support from the Learned Societies fund towards the costs of attending up to three conferences and workshops per annum. Applications will be required to meet ESRC academic and residential eligibility requirements. In addition to our ESRC quota awards we also enter students for the ESRC 'open' "1+3" or "+3" competition studentships. These are awarded through a national competition and the Department takes a decision on who to enter for this. NERC/ESRC Interdisciplinary Research Studentships These are PhD awards that aim to encourage postgraduate research on environmental issues which are of interest to both ESRC and NERC and which require the combined approaches of both the environmental and social sciences. It is possible for applicants for University of Sheffield studentships to indicate their interest in being considered for ESRC/NERC studentships. All candidates in physical geography who apply or have applied for a PhD place before 24 February 2010 will be automatically considered for this; no additional step needs to be taken to register an interest in being considered for this award. Please note that all application materials, including references must be submitted by 24 February 2010. Also note that the competition for this will be extremely strong - only candidates with a First or clearly predicted Firsts and/or Distinctions or clearly predicted Distinctions at Masters-level are likely to be shortlisted.
