ESRC White Rose Network Funded PhD Studentships 2013
Research Network: Reshaping Multiculturalism through Cultural Practices
Funding deadline: Friday 15 March 2013.
Applications are invited for three fully funded doctoral studentships, within an ESRC-funded research network involving Sheffield, Leeds, and York Universities (which comprise the White Rose Doctoral Training Centre). The network, entitled Reshaping Multiculturalism through Cultural Practices, will investigate the ways in which multiculturalism – as a set of ideas and ideals, practices and policies – is being reshaped by those who are most affected by it: cultural minorities. The projects will investigate cultural practices through which ethnic, linguistic and religious minority groups are working through problems and challenges associated with multiculturalism. The projects are defined openly at this stage, to allow students the opportunity to shape their own projects, while working within a coherent network with shared interests and a collective focus on multiculturalism.
Each of the three studentships will be based at one of the three universities within this network but will actively engage with the other universities within this Doctoral Training Centre network, which includes Sheffield, Leeds and York Universities.
Project 1: Multiculturalism, Gender and Sexuality
This project is based at Sheffield University in the Department of Geography. The supervisory team will include Professor Richard Phillips (Sheffield, Geography) and Yasmin Hussain (Leeds, Sociology and Social Policy) and Baroness Haleh Afshar (York, Politics). For more information, please contact Professor Richard Phillips (r.phillips@sheffield.ac.uk) and, for help with the application process (for a place in the Geography PhD programme), contact Laura Pitts, the Postgraduate Programmes Officer (geo-apply@sheffield.ac.uk).
Project 2: Multiculturalism, Culture and Controversy
This project is based at York University in the Departments of Politics, where the successful applicant will be registered, and English. The supervisory team will include Claire Chambers (York, English), Matthew Festenstein (York, Politics) and Professor Richard Phillips (Sheffield, Geography). For more information, please contact Dr Claire Chambers (Claire.Chambers@york.ac.uk) and, for help with the application process (for a place in the Politics PhD programme),, contact the Postgraduate Admissions Team (pg-admissions@york.ac.uk).
Project 3: Rethinking Multiculturalism from Below: Encounters in Everyday Spaces
This project is based at Leeds. The supervisory team will include Paul Bagguley (Leeds, Sociology and Social Policy) and Dr Patricia Noxolo (Sheffield, Geography). For more information, please contact Dr Paul Bagguley (P.Bagguley@leeds.ac.uk) and, for help with the application process (for a place in the Sociology and Social Policy PhD programme), contact the Postgraduate Administrator (j.s.lewis@leeds.ac.uk).
Application Procedure
These +3 studentships offer full funding for three years; candidates must have a Bachelors Degree in a relevant discipline and must have completed a Masters Degree with research training before beginning this doctoral programme (in October 2013). Candidates must fully complete application for admission to the institution at which they would be based, including upload of both references, specifying this Network and Supervisor on the application, and also emailing the lead supervisor to state that you wish to be considered within this scheme. Candidates may apply for more than one of the three projects specified here by applying to more than one of the institutions as explained above.
Please note that you must submit all your documentation (including references) by the funding deadline. You can do this by uploading your documents onto your online application, or by contacting the appropriate programme administrator. This is extremely important- if we have not received your references by the deadline, we cannot consider you for nomination. Further information on how to apply can be found on the Department of Geography's Funding and Application webpages.
