Research activities
Founded in 1908, and graded well into the top 10 research departments for Geography at the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, with 70% of our work "internationally excellent" or "world-leading", the Department of Geography is one of the leading research departments in Geography. With over 30 full-time academic staff, a graduate school of over 50 PhD and Masters students, and more than 10 full-time researchers employed on research contracts at any one time, we are one of the larger Geography departments in the UK. Research in the department focuses on both human and physical geography equally, as well as on the emerging productive synergies between the two. In total, there are four research groups, all of which connect with and shape key debates in their fields. All are interdisciplinary in orientation; indeed, interdisciplinary working is a hallmark of research activity in the department, as is the vibrancy and inclusivity of our research culture. In addition, research in the department connects with a number of University research centres, and benefits from state-of-the-art SRIF2 investment through a Solute Systems Laboratory, an Erosion Laboratory, Interdisciplinary Centre of the Social Sciences and the Humanities Research Institute. Research visitors to the Department, potential fellows and graduate students are particularly welcome, be these international or national. Professor Nicky Gregson (Director of Research) |
