Research Centres
Research Centres concentrate on areas of high quality research, and may involve collaborations with a number of other departments and/or institutions.
Members of the department are actively involved in the following University Research Centres:
Catchment Science Centre (CSC)
Research in the Catchment Science Centre (CSC) aims to deliver novel interdisciplinary solutions to support the sustainable management of freshwater ecosystems. The CSC is a collaborative research initiative, established jointly by The University of Sheffield and the Environment Agency. It draws on expertise from across multiple academic departments at Sheffield, and has strong links with national and international academic and non-academic partners. The CSC is a key element in the delivery of the Environment Agency's Integrated Catchment Science programme.
The Centre for Criminological Research (CCR)
The Centre for Criminological Research is the focal point for criminology and criminal justice at the University of Sheffield. Reaching across the university to bring together experts from a wide-range of excellent departments, it forms a multi-disciplinary Centre conducting high quality research about key criminological subjects. Its members are an experienced team of researchers, many with strong international reputations in their own field. They undertake theoretical and applied work, contributing at the highest levels to criminological knowledge and policy development.
Sheffield Centre for International Drylands Research (SCIDR)
The Sheffield Centre for International Drylands Research (SCIDR) conducts research into dryland environments and peoples, and is an independant research centre of the University of Sheffield. Collaborative research is conducted with institutions in Europe, Africa, North America, Asia and Australia. SCIDR also provides a luminescence dating facility.
Sheffield Institute of International Development (SIID)
The Sheffield Institute of International Development (SIID) is a new inter-disciplinary centre, based within the faculty of social sciences, which aims to bring together leading researchers in international development.
SIID expands the volume of excellent research in the area of international development and support postgraduate activities studies alongside providing a forum for debate and analysis of the pressing issues in global development. SIID also encourages a series of outreach, advisory and engagement activities.
Sheffield Political Economy Research Institute (SPERI)
SPERI is an interdisciplinary research centre which focuses on policy problems raised by the current transformation of the world economy. It was set up in the belief that many of the perspectives of the past were no long adequate to understand the deep-seated changes presently sweeping the political and economic world, and to explore new approaches to politics and economics that jointly challenge our existing explanations of human behaviour. In short, SPERI aims to provide an institutional home for political economy in Britain and to take a leading role in the renaissance of this important subject.
South East Europe Research Centre
SEERC is an international research centre jointly established by the University of Sheffield and CITY Liberal Studies; it is located in one of the ancient hubs of South-East Europe, Thessaloniki, Greece. The Centre and its activities are founded on the belief that by supporting the peoples, economies and political institutions of South-East Europe through the conduct of research and policy analysis, the dissemination and application of findings and the facilitation of open and informed discussion, a significant contribution can be made to the development of a stronger, more stable and more prosperous European community.
Centre for Study of Childhood and Youth (CSCY)
The Centre for the Study of Childhood and Youth (CSCY) is a multi-disciplinary Research Centre committed to contributing to the improvement of children and young people's lives. Through research and dissemination it is actively involved in gaining a greater understanding of the lives of children and young people in modern society and in helping to develop and shape local, national and international policies that improve their everyday lives.
Centre for Well-being in Public Policy (CWiPP)
The Centre for Well-being in Public Policy considers how people's health and well-being can be defined, measured and improved in ways that help policy-makers determine the best use of scarce resources, and to investigate the determinants of well-being insofar as these are relevant to policy formulation. The Centre is truly interdisciplinary, bringing together researchers from such disciplines as Economics, Psychology, Political Science, Geography, Criminology, Animal and Plant Sciences, Public Health and Mental Health. Throughout its activities, the Centre aims to combine theoretical development with policy relevance.
