Ecosystem Dynamics and Biogeochemistry
Research on ecosystem dynamics and biogeochemistry with the Department takes an interdisciplinary approach to understanding ecosystem processes at a variety of spatial scales, from the molecular to the landscape-scale. Key themes of the group are: the interaction between biological and physical processes in cold regions and fluvial environments; glacial hydrology, ecology and biogeochemistry; ecosystem response to environmental change; human impacts on ecosystems and the services that they provide, and; ecosystem management and restoration.
The research activities of the cluster are centred on fieldwork, which is focussed in both polar and temperate environments, ranging from the River Don in Sheffield to remote regions of the Arctic and Antarctic. This is complemented by analysis in our specialist laboratory facilities.
As an interdisciplinary research group, we collaborate widely with other research groups within the University and beyond. We have links with the Department of Animal and Plant Sciences, Department of Civil Engineering, Catchment Science Centre and the Kroto Research Institute and a number of international institutions, including the University Centre on Svalbard (UNIS).
We welcome doctoral research applications in this interdisciplinary area and have a vibrant postgraduate community within the Department within this field.
