The University of Sheffield
Department of Geography

Policy, Governance and Participation

The Department's research in political, economic and environmental geographies covers in particular issues of policy, governance and participation, with a focus on four themes: regional policy and its evaluation; electoral geography, citizenship and participation; the human dimensions of development, local and global environmental change; and health geographies.

Research in the first two of these areas primarily uses quantitative approaches, with mixed methods being more widely applied in the third area.

Research on inequalities is located within SASI and includes projects investigating the spatial impacts of social policies through simulation modelling, linking censuses through time and mapping poverty and local socio-economic polarisation.

Staff are involved in many international collaborations, notably with colleagues in the USA, Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Greece, New Zealand, Japan, Canada, Ghana and Ireland.

Collaborations within Sheffield include: PERC, ScHARR, SEERC and ICOSS. This work has been funded by ESRC, the EU, DFID, ODPM, DWP, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, Leverhulme, IPPR, Shelter, WHO, private companies and charities.
