General interests

More general interests include climatology, Earth sciences, remote sensing, applied and historical meteorology, including instruments and observations, with special interests in astronomy and planetary science. Edward is actively interested in a possible solar-climatic link - not all global warming is likely man-made! An active meteorological observer, Edward maintains an R&D Instromet automatic weather station at Norwood, north Sheffield as part of the Climatological Observers Link (COL) network.

Screen
Homebuilt wooden/plastic thermometer screen with calibrated electronic sensor in small cylindrical plastic screen alongside
Mast
Aluminium mast with wind and sunshine sensors on house roof.

All sensors, including precipitation, continuously log data at 1-minute intervals, with nearly complete records obtained since December 2005. Weather data for Sheffield Norwood are published monthly by the Climatological Observers Link (see link, right). Recent data are available as downloads (see link, right); please contact Edward if you find these data useful and/or for more details.

Comet Hale-Bopp
Whenever he has time and access to suitable skies, Edward dabbles in photography and imaging of many astronomical and meteorological subjects. The example above is his photograph of Comet Hale-Bopp in Perseus. This was one of the most spectacular comets of the twentieth century. Note the broad, curving yellow-white dust tail and the faint, streaming, filamentary, bluish ion tail. Captured from Boniface Downs, Ventnor, Isle of Wight, around 21:30 UT on 6 April, 1997. 5 minutes' exposure using 135-mm Pentacon lens at f/2.8 on Kodak Ektachrome Elite II 400 ISO slide film.
