Paul White has been a member of the Sheffield staff since 1974, having graduated with BA and DPhil degrees from the University of Oxford. He has also held visiting posts at various European universities including Paris I, Zaragoza (Spain) and Cagliari (Italy).

In 2004 Paul was appointed Pro Vice-Chancellor for Learning and Teaching, and whilst this is now his main role in the University, he still continues with some undergraduate teaching. Since 2009, he has also been Co-Chair of the Higher Education Adademy's Pro Vice-Chancellor Network.

Research Interests

International migration, ethnic minority settlement, marginalised and vulnerable communities, comparative urban social geography (all at the European level).

Current research

Paul's main current and recent research involves three themes: International Migration; Japanese Migration & Settlement Patterns and the Social Geography of European Cities.

In connection with these various research interests he has recently been involved with consultancy activities for a variety of international organisations such as the Council of Europe and the Fundação Luso-Americana para o Desenvolvimento (Lisbon). Since 2000 he has given invited papers at a number of international meetings include conferences in Amsterdam, Helsinki, Kobe, Lisbon, Rotterdam, and Strasbourg.

Other long-standing and ongoing research interests include study of the changing social geography of Paris and London, using census results to identify the trajectories of neighbourhood change. Paul has a long-standing research interest in Paris, which resulted in the publication of a major book (with Daniel Noin) in 1997. Other recent work there has included studies of creative literature depicting social issues in the Paris suburbs.

Paul has supervised over 20 students to successful PhDs. His current research students is Roza Tchoukaleyska. For more details see the link to the right

Awards

In 2006 Paul received the Edward Heath Award of the Royal Geographical Society, for his research on the geography of Europe.
