David Wilton obtained a BSc in Chemical Physics (1991) and PhD in Theoretical Chemistry (1996) from The University of Sheffield. He has worked on various RCUK and industrially funded research projects in the physical and chemical sciences.

Research Interests

Developing computer models of physical and chemical processes. Modelling of the polar regions, particularly relating to icebergs and their sources.

Current research

I am working on a NERC funded project: "A century of variability in Greenland melting and iceberg calving". The overall aim is to reduce uncertainty in the rate of iceberg calving from the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) over the course of the 20th and early 21st century. There are two main strands to my work:

  • using a coupled ocean-iceberg model to study icebergs from GrIS, and other northern hemisphere sources, as they drift into Baffin Bay, the Nordic Seas and the North Atlantic
  • reconstructing the GrIS surface mass balance at high spatial resolution
