Tracing the relationship between cultures of consumption, ethnic identity and civic belonging in France, my doctoral research focuses on public spaces and outdoor commerce in Montpellier. Fieldwork was completed in the diverse Plan Cabanes/Figuerolles neighbourhood of Montpellier where municipally-led urban regeneration and the introduction of new heritage protection codes have altered the form and functions of neighbourhood markets and plazas.
