Life@Sheffield
Geography Student Video Competition, spring semester 2013

We are looking for short videos focusing on different aspects of the geography undergraduate experience here at the University of Sheffield.

This semester there is only one video category and this is open to all Geography and Environmental Science undergraduates.

We are looking for videos of you and your friends on fieldclasses or undertaking dissertation or other field research (see example videos, right, for ideas and inspiration!). Videos can take any format - you can be as inventive as you like - but should be engaging and informative.

It doesn't have to be something you've done or will do (fieldwork, fieldclass) this semester; it could be something you filmed last year.

Prize

The winner will receive a £100 prize plus a 'Creative Media in Geography' certificate from the department that you can list on your CV and add to the Sheffield Graduate Award.

We are looking for high-quality, informative videos that showcase our students' creativity, and also offer insights to the general public on the student experience here in the Geography department from your own perspective. The best of these videos will feature on the department's website.

Making your video and entering

Making videos isn't hard! You don't need your own camcorder, many digital SLR cameras and newer smartphones also capture video. If you've got an 8MP or above, or know you can shoot in HD, the quality will be good enough.

Videos should be between 2 and 5 minutes long, and broadly fit the fieldclass, dissertation or other field research category.

The Creative Media team, Level 1 of the Information Commons, provide training, support, facilities and equipment to help you put together exciting and visually engaging videos. The Creative Media webpages have all the details, together with a great set of video guides to get you started.

The video must be your own (or a group of current Geography or ES students) work, and it's your responsibility to ensure that everyone in the video is happy to appear in it and knows what it will be used for.

You must also ensure that all material is copyright-safe - read the Creative Media and YouTube copyright pages. Remember, copyright also covers many music and other audio tracks. YouTube's AudioSwap is a catalogue of copyright-safe music.

Videos will be hosted on the department's YouTube channel, so should be in a suitable format, but we will also accept iMovie Project files. The department reserves the right to request editorial changes before hosting it on our channel.

Entries will be judged by a panel of academic and academic support staff in the Geography department.
The closing date for entries will be on Friday 17 May, 2013.

Entries should be made to Graham Allsopp, the department's Marketing Officer. It will be easiest to meet up with Graham to hand over your files. Graham can also help out with any queries or other help you might need.

Example videos

Here are some great videos already made by or with our students, to give you some idea what we are looking for.

But we're also looking for your original ideas, so be creative!

Do note that some of these videos contain copyrighted music, so wouldn't be eligible for the competition and can't be hosted on our channel.
