Germanic Studies at Sheffield
Germanic Studies at Sheffield is well known as a department of high academic standing, with a strong reputation for both teaching and research, and at the same time as a lively and friendly place to do a German or Germanic Studies degree.
We are a well-staffed department, with nine academics, two full-time lectors - one German, one Austrian - and several language and tutorial assistants and research associates. The department has its own dedicated floor in the new Jessop West building, which also houses the other Modern Languages departments, the School of English and the Department of History. Our building is at the heart of the University campus, close to the Students' Union, the University Library and all the resources of Sheffield City Centre.
In recent years, the Department has sustained and developed the high quality of its research. In the Research Assessment Exercise 2008, 75% of our research was ranked as being of internationally recognised standard or better, with 30% judged as internationally excellent or world-leading. In the most recent Teaching Quality exercise, we were rated excellent.
A broad-based Department
Our staff share and encourage a broad view of German and Germanic Studies as a university subject. The Department offers a comprehensive range of options in German - in literature, culture, politics, history, linguistics, philosophy, film. At the same time, we are unique in Great Britain in the range of Germanic Languages that can be studied here: both Dutch and Luxembourgish can be taken in our degree programmes. |
