Dutch

At Sheffield, Dutch is an integral part of the Department of Germanic Studies. With two full time staff members teaching Dutch, four more staff who speak the language fluently, two native speaker language assistants, we are by far the largest Dutch section at any university outside London. Learning Dutch is much easier than you may think. And once you have mastered the basics of the language, we offer a variety of further options.
Dutch is big among the smaller languages of the EU. It is the native language of 21 million people in Holland and Belgium. Speaking Dutch alongside German, French or another modern language will give you a real advantage on the European labour market. It will also put you in touch with a distinctive area of European culture.
Within Germanic Studies at Sheffield, Dutch is offered on a flexible basis. If you choose to study Dutch, you can develop your knowledge over a period of one, two or three years. Whatever you decide to do, it will be a gratifying experience, as Dutch is an accessible language and the small tutorial groups will help you to develop a high level of linguistic competence in a relatively short period of time.

There are several degree frameworks in which you can study Dutch:
- Honours Degree in German with Dutch, French with Dutch or History with Dutch. You spend 2/3 of your time on German, French or History modules, and 1/3 on the Dutch course. In case of German with Dutch and French with Dutch, you will split your Year Abroad between Germany (or Austria) and Holland (or Flanders) or France and to Holland or Flanders. If you opt for History with Dutch you will spend your full Year Abroad in the Netherlands.

Beginners' Dutch

Whichever path you opt for, you will start with the module Beginners' Dutch , which is offered at either First Year or Second Year level.
Summer language courses are available in the Netherlands and Belgium and every year a (partly sponsored) excursion to Amsterdam is organised during the Spring Semester. For those language students who study Dutch at levels Two and Three, exchange programmes with universities in The Netherlands and Belgium are available for a study period of between four and six months during the Year Abroad. Sheffield is also an active partner in the collaborative project the Virtual Dutch.
