The University of Sheffield
Department of Germanic Studies

Hi! I´m Neil and I´m just finishing off my first year of Single Honours Germanic Studies.

Of all the universities I looked at last year, Sheffield appeared to have the most diverse of all departments. The sizeable faculty specialises in almost every field of Germanic Studies that you could ever possibly want to study, including other Germanic languages such as Dutch, Swedish and even Luxembourgish!

As a student, the city of Sheffield is the place to be. There isn´t one night where you´ll be stuck for something to do, whether it be one of the numerous clubs in the city or one of the many Union nights. The university accommodation is also conveniently placed in one of the nicest areas of the city, which also happens to have one of the highest takeaway to person ratios I´ve ever seen.

My first year here has been amazing – I´ve studied a wide range of topics and even taken up two new languages, Dutch and Russian. The department as a whole is extremely friendly and relaxed. There is also a strong social side to the department, with both the German and Dutch societies bringing people from all levels (and indeed nationalities) together within the department. I´m delighted that I chose Sheffield; it´s the perfect place to be a student!
