(1st year Germanic and Hispanic Studies)

So far this first year has been a good balance of all things Germanic-related. Culture lectures have given me a taster of Nietzsche, Marx and Kafka and the language learning has been varied and fun, which I think that is definitely thanks to the teaching.

By studying languages I know that my degree will be useful to me whatever career path I choose - anything is possible, and I don´t have to know exactly what I want to do yet.

Your tutor can help support you in job applications with references etc., and the University offers a lot of advice on CVs, interview techniques and many other things, including fairs where companies come and talk to students about job opportunities.

Your personal tutor can help you with any problem or worry you have. They will listen and offer different options or advice and if there is a good reason why you need an extension for work they will arrange it for you. The department has a library where you can work and read German newspapers or magazines or just do your work and have a cup of tea.

When I was deciding what university to go to I went on a road trip with my dad to visit four universities with a good reputation for languages. Sheffield stood out from the rest because of the people who I talked to during my visit. When I met some of the teachers I thought, 'Yes, I would enjoy studying here', everyone was very genuine and generous with their time. The city was attractive to me because it has a great personality. People are friendly, going out is far too easy and fun and the Union and societies offer many different options for how to distract yourself from work. I made the right choice.
